Saud Shakeel’s gritty century puts Pakistan in command at Rawalpindi

RAWALPINDI: On day two of the gripping third Test in Rawalpindi, Saud Shakeel’s masterful 134 anchored Pakistan’s innings, propelling them from an uncertain 46-3 to a promising 344 all out, gaining a 77-run lead over England. Shakeel demonstrated poise and resilience, crafting four pivotal 50-plus partnerships to revive Pakistan’s innings, even collaborating with tailenders Noman Ali and Sajid Khan in a remarkable display of determination.

England, aiming for a response, faltered as Pakistan’s spinners seized control, reducing the visitors to 24-3 before play halted due to bad light. Joe Root, with five runs to his name, holds England’s hopes alongside Harry Brook on three, with both players facing a formidable task when play resumes on Saturday.

Earlier in the day, England captain Ben Stokes began with spin from both ends, and Saud Shakeel had an early reprieve on 26, narrowly escaping dismissal when his edge off Shoaib Bashir grazed wicketkeeper Jamie Smith’s shin. Off-spinner Bashir claimed Pakistan captain Shan Masood soon after, while Rehan Ahmed’s timely spell (4-66) saw him trap Mohammad Rizwan lbw for 25, with Rizwan unable to overturn the decision upon review.

Pakistan’s commanding position and early strikes from their spinners have left England with a challenging battle to stay in contention. Root and Brook’s response will be crucial as Pakistan pushes for a memorable series victory on home soil.
