Samson’s century leads India to victory in T20 series opener against South Africa

DURBAN: India’s opener Sanju Samson powered the visitors to a 61-run victory over South Africa in the first match of a four-game T20 series in Durban on Friday. Samson’s blazing century set the stage for India, who posted a formidable 202 for eight after being asked to bat first. In response, South Africa faltered, bowled out for 141 in 17.5 overs.

Samson’s 107 off just 50 balls showcased his immense firepower as he smashed 10 sixes and seven fours, scoring at an impressive strike rate of 214. His aggressive display accounted for more than half of India’s total, setting a high target that the hosts struggled to chase down at Kingsmead.

Despite a slight slowdown in the latter stages of India’s innings, Samson’s fireworks were enough to secure the win. Reflecting on Samson’s performance, India captain Suryakumar Yadav commended the batter’s relentless dedication: “The amount of hard work he has put in over the last few years, doing those boring things again and again, he is reaping the fruits now.”

Yadav also praised Samson’s selfless approach, noting his continued aggression even in the 90s, prioritizing the team’s success over personal milestones. With this stellar start, India takes an early lead in the series, bolstered by Samson’s commanding form.
