Rabada ruled out of ODIs, doubts remain over Australia tests

DURBAN: South Africa fast bowler Kagiso Rabada has been ruled out of the ODI series against Australia because of a hamstring injury and is a doubt for the subsequent three-test series, Cricket South Africa (CSA) said.

Rabada suffered a right hamstring strain and will miss the three one-day internationals beginning in Durban on Sept. 24.

“His availability for the three-match test series against Australia will depend on how he progresses through his rehabilitation,” CSA said in a statement, adding that a decision on his selection would be made closer to the series.

Rabada’s domestic bowling coach Allan Donald told South African media that the injury could keep the 31-year-old sidelined for up to 10 weeks.

The first test is scheduled to begin in Durban on Oct. 9, with Gqeberha and Cape Town hosting the other matches.

Rabada’s absence would be a major setback for South Africa, who defeated Australia in the World Test Championship final at Lord’s last year, with the fast bowler taking nine wickets in the match.

Rabada has an impressive record against Australia, averaging 21.39 with the ball in 11 tests, slightly better than his career average of 22.03.

South Africa will first face Australia in three ODIs before the teams meet in the test series.(REUTERS)
