Pope silences doubters with gritty century as England fight back at Headingley

LEEDS, England: Ollie Pope reaffirmed his place at number three in England’s Test batting order with a composed and timely century against India in the opening Test at Headingley, justifying the faith placed in him by captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum.

With England in desperate need of resistance after India posted a daunting 471 in their first innings, Pope arrived at the crease early after Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Zak Crawley in the opening over. Under intense pressure and facing the world’s top-ranked Test bowler, Pope overcame early nerves to build a vital partnership of 122 with opener Ben Duckett.

Pope’s unbeaten hundred — his ninth in Test cricket — helped England reach 209-3 by stumps on day two, shifting momentum after India were cruising at 430-3 before lunch. The innings also eased concerns over Pope’s consistency, particularly against high-quality opposition, as he followed up his 171 against Zimbabwe with another century when England needed it most.

“I just think he was so calm,” said Duckett. “He couldn’t walk out in tougher conditions. I had goosebumps when he got his 100.”

Despite earlier calls for Jacob Bethell — the young left-hander who impressed with an average of 52 in New Zealand — Pope’s performance has all but ended debate over England’s number three slot for now. As England push for a comeback in this high-stakes series, Pope’s return to form could prove pivotal.
