Pakistan fight back to restrict South Africa on boxing day in Centurion

PRETORIA: Pakistan staged a spirited fightback to restrict South Africa to 82 for three at the close of play on the opening day of the first Test in Centurion. Earlier, Pakistan were bowled out for a modest 211, with South Africa’s Dane Paterson and debutant Corbin Bosch wreaking havoc on a bowler-friendly surface.

Khurram Shahzad and Mohammad Abbas spearheaded Pakistan’s response with the ball. Khurram removed both Tony de Zorzi (2) and Ryan Rickelton (8) cheaply, while Abbas, returning to Test cricket after three years, trapped Tristan Stubbs (9) leg before wicket. South Africa, trailing by 129 runs, found themselves in a precarious position at stumps.

Aiden Markram provided some resistance with an unbeaten 47, partnering with captain Temba Bavuma (4 not out) to steady the ship. The duo will look to build on their stand when play resumes on Friday.

South Africa’s decision to field an all-seam attack paid dividends early on, with Paterson claiming an impressive 5-61 in 16 overs. Bosch, making his Test debut at his home ground, made an immediate impact by dismissing Pakistan captain Shan Masood with his first delivery.
