New Zealand recover late to post 315-9 on Day One of third Test against England

New Zealand reached 315-9 on the opening day of the third Test against England in Hamilton on Saturday, bouncing back late after a middle-order collapse.

Openers Tom Latham (63) and Will Young (42) gave the hosts a solid start with a 105-run opening stand, their best partnership of the series. However, England’s seamers, led by Matthew Potts (3-75) and Gus Atkinson (3-55), brought the visitors back into the game with disciplined bowling.

After a wicket-less first session, England capitalized on loose shots from New Zealand’s middle order, reducing the hosts to 194-6 at one stage. Key wickets included Kane Williamson, who was bowled for 44 in an unfortunate manner, and contributions from Rachin Ravindra (18), Daryl Mitchell (14), and Tom Blundell (21), all caught on the off-side.

Mitchell Santner provided late resistance with an unbeaten 50, including a straight six off the final ball of the day. He was supported by Tim Southee, who thrilled the crowd with a quickfire 23 off 10 balls, smashing three sixes to edge closer to the milestone of 100 career sixes in Tests.

Potts, celebrating his recall, praised England’s patience after a slow start. “We knew if we stuck to our guns, we would eventually get rewards,” he said. Gus Atkinson, who now has 51 Test wickets in his debut year, benefited from New Zealand’s aggressive approach, which yielded 72% of their runs in boundaries.

Santner commended the opening partnership but acknowledged England’s persistence. “There’s still enough in the wicket, and a little bit of uneven bounce,” he noted, emphasizing the importance of spin later in the match.

England, aiming for a 3-0 series sweep, will look to finish off the New Zealand innings early on day two and build on their momentum.
