New Zealand head coach Stead to step down as white-ball coach

AUCKLAND: New Zealand head coach Gary Stead has confirmed he will no longer lead the national side in One-Day Internationals and T20s but remains open to continuing as Test coach. Stead, who has been at the helm since 2018, will see his current contract expire in June.

The 53-year-old said he would take a month to consider his future, highlighting the demanding nature of the past year. “I’m looking forward to getting away from touring life for a while and having a think about my future,” Stead said in a statement released by New Zealand Cricket.

He added, “The past six to seven months has been particularly busy with relatively non-stop cricket action since September. I now want to evaluate my options but still feel I have coaching left in me, albeit not as Head Coach across all formats.”

New Zealand concluded their home summer in style with a 3-0 ODI series sweep over Pakistan. While Stead weighs his options, New Zealand Cricket has announced it will begin the search for a new head coach starting next week.
