Murphy called up, Smith to lead Australia in Boxing day Test

MELBOURNE: Spinner Todd Murphy has been called into Australia’s squad for the fourth Ashes Test this week following Nathan Lyon’s series-ending hamstring injury, while captain Pat Cummins will miss the rest of the contest as his back issue is carefully managed.

Lyon was ruled out after being injured during Australia’s 82-run victory over England in the third Test in Adelaide on Sunday, a win that secured an unassailable series lead and ensured the hosts retained the Ashes. Murphy now comes into the frame as Australia reshuffle their bowling attack.

Steve Smith has been named in the squad despite missing the third Test due to vertigo and will once again captain the side in Cummins’ absence, as he did in the opening two matches. Cummins, who claimed six for 117 in Adelaide, will not be risked further, with Brendan Doggett or Michael Neser likely to step in as a pace replacement.

Coach Andrew McDonald confirmed the decision on Tuesday, stressing that protecting Cummins’ long-term fitness was the priority now that the series has been won. Fast bowler Jhye Richardson has also been added to the squad as another pace option following impressive domestic performances since returning from shoulder surgery.

Australia squad: Steve Smith (captain), Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Brendan Doggett, Cameron Green, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Todd Murphy, Michael Neser, Jhye Richardson, Mitchell Starc, Jake Weatherald, Beau Webster.
