Mendis guides Sri Lanka to thrilling ODI series win over New Zealand

Kusal Mendis delivered a resilient performance, scoring an unbeaten 74 to steer Sri Lanka to a dramatic three-wicket victory over New Zealand in the second ODI on Sunday, sealing the three-match series 2-0.

Battling a groin injury and a precarious position at 93-5, Mendis anchored the chase with his 102-ball innings, which included six boundaries. He was supported by Maheesh Theekshana’s crucial 27 not out, as the duo’s unbroken 47-run partnership guided the hosts to their 210-run target with six balls remaining in the rain-reduced 47-over contest in Pallekele.

“The injury is not too serious, but I struggled with shot-making,” Mendis said post-match. “My getaway shot is the sweep, but I couldn’t sweep tonight, and it was tough.”

New Zealand’s bowlers, led by off-spinner Michael Bracewell (4-36), had the upper hand early but couldn’t break the Mendis-Theekshana stand.

Earlier, the Sri Lankan spinners dismantled New Zealand’s batting lineup, with Jeffrey Vandersay (3-39) and Theekshana (3-42) restricting the visitors to 209 in 45.1 overs. Mark Chapman (76) and Mitchell Hay (49) offered resistance, adding 75 for the fifth wicket before Avishka Fernando’s spectacular diving catch ended Chapman’s innings.

The third and final ODI is set for Tuesday in Pallekele.
