India enter Asia Cup as firm favourites amid geopolitical tensions

DUBAI: Reigning T20 world champions India head into the Asia Cup as overwhelming favourites, with a star-studded squad led by skipper Suryakumar Yadav poised to dominate the tournament starting Tuesday in the United Arab Emirates.

Originally scheduled to be hosted by India, the September 9–28 competition was shifted after May’s brief military conflict with neighbours Pakistan. While political tensions continue to linger, the Asian Cricket Council has pressed ahead, confident the tournament will showcase top-tier cricket.

India, determined to retain their crown, have assembled a formidable unit. Pace ace Jasprit Bumrah, carefully managed due to his all-format workload, returns to spearhead the attack with his mastery in both the powerplay and death overs. In batting, the return of Test captain Shubman Gill bolsters a lineup already brimming with firepower, including Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma—currently ranked the top two T20 batters in the world—alongside the explosive Suryakumar.

With an eye on building momentum for next year’s T20 World Cup, India appear ready to sweep aside rivals and distractions alike in their quest for back-to-back Asia Cup triumphs.
