Gurbaz century and Omarzai’s allround brilliance secure Afghanistan series win over Bangladesh

SHARJAH: Afghanistan claimed a memorable series victory over Bangladesh with a five-wicket win in the third ODI in Sharjah on Monday, thanks to impressive performances by opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz and allrounder Azmatullah Omarzai. Gurbaz anchored the chase with a determined 101 off 120 balls, and Omarzai displayed his versatility by taking four wickets before contributing an unbeaten 70 off 77 deliveries to guide Afghanistan home with 10 balls to spare.

Chasing Bangladesh’s 244-8, Afghanistan overcame a shaky start as Bangladesh pacers Mustafizur Rahman (2-50) and Nahid Rana (2-40) reduced them to 84-3. However, Gurbaz and Omarzai stabilized the innings with a crucial 100-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Gurbaz’s innings included seven sixes and five boundaries, marking his eighth ODI century. Although he fell in the 39th over with 61 runs still required, Omarzai held his nerve to finish the chase, showcasing his allround talent.

Earlier, Bangladesh’s total was driven by Mohammad Mahmudullah’s 98 off as many balls and stand-in captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s 66. Mahmudullah’s innings ended in a run-out on the last ball, as Afghanistan kept Bangladesh under control.

The victory not only clinched the series 2-1 for Afghanistan but also marked their third consecutive series win this year, following triumphs over Ireland (2-0) and South Africa (2-1). Afghanistan’s skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi expressed pride in his team’s performance, highlighting the continued growth of Afghan cricket after their strong performances in last year’s World Cup against teams like England, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.
