Gupta appointed new ICC CEO, succeeding Allardice

DUBAI: Indian sports executive Sanjog Gupta has officially taken over as the new chief executive officer of the International Cricket Council (ICC), succeeding Australia’s Geoff Allardice, the governing body announced on Monday.

Gupta steps into the role after leading JioStar Sports, following the $8.5 billion merger between Reliance Industries and Walt Disney’s Indian media assets in late 2023. His appointment marks a significant leadership shift at the ICC, as the sport looks to expand its global footprint.

Allardice, who served as ICC CEO since November 2021 following an interim spell after Manu Sawhney’s suspension, stepped down earlier this year.

“These are exciting times for the sport,” Gupta said. “Cricket’s inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games and the rapid deployment of technology offer immense potential for global growth.”

ICC chair Jay Shah welcomed Gupta’s appointment, highlighting his experience in broadcasting and digital innovation. “His understanding of sports media and his passion for technology will be crucial as we aim to grow the game worldwide,” Shah said.(Reuters)
