Green returns as Australia name squad for WTC final against South Africa

MELBOURNE: Australia have named all-rounder Cameron Green in their 15-man squad for the World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa, set to be played at Lord’s from June 11 to 15. Green makes a welcome return after undergoing surgery for a stress fracture in his lower back last October. He recently proved his fitness playing county cricket for Gloucestershire.

Skipper Pat Cummins, who missed the Sri Lanka tour and the Champions Trophy due to personal reasons and an ankle injury, is back to lead the side. Pace spearhead Josh Hazlewood also returns after recovering from a hip issue.

“We are fortunate and looking forward to having Pat, Josh and Cam back in the squad,” said chief selector George Bailey.

Australia, the reigning WTC champions after their triumph over India at The Oval in 2023, have also included 19-year-old Sam Konstas as a potential opening option. Reports suggest Marnus Labuschagne may move up the order to fill the opener’s role.

Following the final, Australia will head to the Caribbean for a three-Test series against the West Indies starting June 25. A separate squad for the five T20Is that follow will be announced later.

Australia squad: Pat Cummins (captain), Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Sam Konstas, Matt Kuhnemann, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Beau Webster.
Travelling reserve: Brendan Doggett
