MIA’s tribute to a legend
Preparations are underway for the opening of ‘Muhammad Ali: Tribute to a Legend’, an exhibition dedicated to the boxing great (1942-2016), which will open at the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) on Wednesday.
The exhibition, at MIA’s fourth floor eastern gallery, will present a unique collection of artefacts from Ali’s career, including photographs from his exhibition bout at the Doha Stadium in 1971 and memorabilia spanning his journey to the 1960 Rome Olympics; his world title-winning bout against Sonny Liston in 1964 and his fight against Leon Spinks in New Orleans in 1978.
The exhibition is organised under the patronage of Qatar Museums Chairperson HE Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and curated by 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum, which will open in a permanent home at the revamped Khalifa International Stadium.
Ali, whose boxing feats and political activism made him one of the best-known figures of the 20th century, died last month.
