Lakers draft Bronny James, setting up historic father-son duo

The Los Angeles Lakers selected Bronny James, the 19-year-old son of NBA legend LeBron James, with the 55th overall pick in the NBA Draft on Thursday. This marks a potential first in NBA history – a father and son playing for the same team.

“There has never been a father and son that have shared an NBA basketball court,” said Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka, highlighting the unique opportunity. While LeBron, at 39, will be competing in the Paris Olympics with Team USA, Bronny is expected to join the Lakers for the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas.

This selection has generated excitement across the basketball world. Lakers legend Magic Johnson called it “must-see TV,” referencing the prospect of Bronny suiting up for the Lakers in Summer League.

Bronny, a guard coming out of the University of Southern California, averaged nearly 5 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists per game last season. He impressed scouts with his defensive skills and athleticism, despite overcoming a heart scare earlier last year. Doctors have since cleared him for competitive basketball.

While Bronny may need time to develop his offensive game, the Lakers believe in his potential. “We’re excited to see this story unfold,” said Pelinka, who mentioned new coach JJ Redick is already crafting a development plan for the young player.

LeBron James has an upcoming decision regarding the final year of his Lakers contract. He can opt in, become a free agent, or re-sign a new deal with the Lakers. While his decision is independent, some speculated it might hinge on Bronny’s draft destination.

“We know and respect that LeBron has a decision… I’m sure he and his family will decide what they are going to do there,” Pelinka acknowledged. However, he emphasized the Lakers’ desire to see LeBron in a Lakers uniform, potentially making NBA history.

The Lakers prioritized character and work ethic over pure talent when selecting Bronny. “Bronny is first and foremost a person of high character and second he’s a young man that works incredibly hard,” stated Pelinka. He praised Bronny’s dedication and commitment, qualities the Lakers value in their developmental players.

With Bronny joining the Lakers, all eyes will be on the development of this historic father-son duo.
