Julien Alfred makes history for Saint Lucia with Olympic gold in women’s 100m
Julien Alfred defied the odds and overcame personal tragedy to become the first ever Olympic medalist from Saint Lucia, claiming a stunning gold medal in the women’s 100 meters on Saturday.
The 23-year-old sprinter, known as “Juju,” powered to victory in 10.72 seconds, leaving pre-race favorite Sha’Carri Richardson in her wake. Alfred’s triumph marks a significant moment for the small Caribbean island nation, with a population of just 110,000, erupting in celebration.
Alfred’s journey to the top of the podium wasn’t without its challenges. She faced the devastating loss of her father at a young age, followed by the passing of her aunt shortly before her Youth Olympic Games silver medal in 2018. Despite these hardships, Alfred found solace in athletics and a chance encounter with coach Edrick Floreal at the University of Texas. Floreal, who has also coached European champion Dina Asher-Smith, became a guiding force for Alfred, supporting her not just as an athlete but also as a person.
Alfred’s victory serves as a testament to her determination and resilience. As she reflects on her success, a quote from her Instagram biography resonates: “Present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.” This golden moment in Paris is just the beginning for the young star from Saint Lucia.
