Asher-Smith eyes Olympic glory

Dina Asher-Smith is aiming to emulate her idol Jessica Ennis-Hill by winning Olympic gold in Paris. The British sprinting superstar, who once carried bags for athletes at the 2012 London Games, is now one of the world’s best.

At 28, the 2019 world 200m champion knows time is running out to secure that elusive Olympic individual medal. With a recent European 100m title under her belt, she faces stiff competition from the likes of Sha’Carri Richardson and the Jamaican sprinters.

In the 200m, Shericka Jackson and Gabby Thomas are her main rivals. “We’re definitely in the golden age of women’s sprinting and it’s great to be acknowledged in that group,” Asher-Smith said.

Ennis-Hill believes her compatriot can triumph. “She’s had a good winter, she’s not had any particular niggles and she’s consistently built for Paris, so I think she can be right up there in the medals, definitely,” Ennis-Hill said.

After nearly two decades with coach John Blackie, Asher-Smith moved to the United States last year. The change has been invigorating. “Being able to switch off has been one of the best things,” she said.

Away from the track, Asher-Smith has taken up pottery. “I wanted to learn a new skill, something creative that stimulated my mind in a different way,” she explained.

Ultimately, though, her focus is on Paris. “I just need to feel free and light and joyful to run fast. That’s my mentality,” she said.
