Townsend claims first Grand Slam title in Wimbledon women’s doubles

LONDON: American tennis player Taylor Townsend captured her first Grand Slam title on Saturday, partnering with Czech star Katerina Siniakova to win the Wimbledon women’s doubles final. The duo triumphed over Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski and New Zealander Erin Routliffe, clinching victory with a scoreline of 7-6(5), 7-6(1).

Despite the rest of the All England Club being shrouded in darkness, Townsend and Siniakova shone under the illuminated Centre Court roof. The victory came in only their tenth match playing together, showcasing their impressive chemistry and skill.

Townsend, 28, who had previously fallen short in the U.S. Open doubles final in 2022 and the French Open doubles final last year, finally broke through to claim her first major title. For Siniakova, the win marked her ninth doubles Slam, adding to her illustrious career.

The Chicago-born Townsend, who became a mother in 2021, was visibly emotional after the match. A double-fault from their opponents sealed the tight contest, leading to an outpouring of joy from Townsend.

“I just have to say I’m so glad that I could team up with Katerina,” Townsend expressed on court, reflecting on her journey to this milestone victory.
