
Qatar win 14 medals at West Asia Para Games in Muscat
MUSCAT: The Qatari Para Sports team won 14 medals — four gold, eight silver and two bronze — at the 5th West Asia Para Games, which conclude in Muscat on Sunday.
The Games feature 612 athletes from 11 West Asian countries — Qatar, Yemen, Palestine, Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and hosts Oman — competing across nine sports: athletics, powerlifting, boccia, table tennis, badminton, cycling, swimming, goalball and wheelchair basketball.
Ali Radi Arshid led Qatar’s medal haul, claiming gold in the 200 metres and 400 metres wheelchair T34 races, silver in the 100 metres and silver in the 800 metres. Abdulrahman Abdul Qader collected silver medals in the javelin and shot put, along with bronze in the discus.
Sarah Hamdi Masoud secured silver medals in the javelin and discus and bronze in the shot put. In swimming, Shamil Shahouf won gold in both the 50 metres and 100 metres freestyle, while Khalifa Al Mutlaq earned silver in the same two events.
Mohammed Rashid Al Kubaisi finished fourth in the 100 metres, 200 metres and 400 metres wheelchair T34 races. Ten-year-old Fahad Al Kubaisi, the youngest athlete at the Games, placed fourth in the 50 metres freestyle and 50 metres backstroke. Qatar’s goalball team also finished fourth overall.
The Qatari delegation was led by Dr. Hassan Mohammed Al Ansari, Secretary General of the Qatar Para Sports Federation, and included 11 athletes. The coaching staff comprised Nabil Al Muslimani (wheelchair athletics), Al Waleed Maghmoul (throwing events), Al Waleed Maghmoul (throwing events), Captain Martin Joseph (swimming) and Abdul Qader Khadim (goalball).
The 5th West Asia Para Games aim to promote social inclusion and strengthen sports empowerment for people with disabilities by providing a competitive platform to showcase athletic ability and achievement.
