Qatar Snooker team reaches quarterfinals at Asian Nations Championship
COLOMBO: The Qatari national snooker team has secured a place in the quarterfinals of the team event at the ongoing Asian Nations Snooker Championship, being held in Sri Lanka until June 28. The tournament features top talent from across Asia and the international snooker circuit.
The Qatari squad—comprising Ali Al Obaidli, Mehna Al Obaidli, and Bashar Hussein—emerged from the tough Group A in second place, behind group winners Pakistan (1). Qatar started strong with a 3–1 win over Sri Lanka (1), but then fell 1–3 to Pakistan and narrowly lost 2–3 to Cambodia. With all three teams—Qatar, Sri Lanka, and Cambodia—ending the group stage with one win apiece, Qatar advanced thanks to a superior frame difference.
In the quarterfinals, Qatar will face a formidable Indian team. Other quarterfinal matchups include Pakistan (1) vs Pakistan (2), Bahrain vs Hong Kong (1), and Malaysia vs Hong Kong (2).
Ali Al Obaidli, one of Qatar’s standout players, recently claimed a bronze medal in the 6-Red Singles event, falling in the semifinals to India’s Paras Gupta. His form continues to be a key asset for Team Qatar as they eye a spot in the semifinals.(QNA)
