Phoebus shines bright with Al Wajba trophy triumph at Al Uqda racecourse

DOHA: Phoebus made a bold statement on the opening day of the Qatar Gold Sword and Trophy (Div. 1 – Turf) at Al Uqda Racecourse on Wednesday, securing his second straight win and third overall in just six career starts. The bay colt, owned by Al Falah Stud and trained by Hamad al-Jehani, showcased his determination in the Al Wajba Trophy, powering past the long-time leader in the final 100 metres to seal a convincing victory. The win underscored Phoebus’ rising-star credentials, with Abdulla Rashid al-Kubaisi, QREC Racing Manager, presenting the trophies.

Elsewhere on the card, Dark Trooper continued his impressive campaign, clinching his third victory in four starts this season in the Sealine Sprint Trophy. The 5YO gelding, owned by Wathnan Racing and trained by Alban de Mieulle, unleashed a late burst of speed to take the win under Soufiane Saadi, completing a swift double for owner and trainer.

Racing history was made in the Local Thoroughbred Cup as the legendary Equinoxe claimed his fifth consecutive title in the 2100m event. The 8YO veteran, also owned by Wathnan Racing and trained by Alban de Mieulle, delivered a trademark late surge under Tomas Lukasek, adding yet another chapter to his storied career.

The day began with a dominant performance from Sejjel in the Purebred Arabian Premium Maiden Cup for 4YOs. The Al Shaqab Racing colt left the field trailing, powering to an emphatic six-and-a-half-length win, his first career victory in just his third start.(Gulf Times)
