Gabi decides not to extend stay at Al Sadd after June 30

DOHA: Al Sadd captain Gabi has decided not to extend his stay at the Qatari side, the player said on his instagram post.

The former Atletico Madrid star joined Sadd on 2 July 2018, and partnered veteran compatriot Xavi in midfield, and won the league in their first season together.

However, the 36-year-old has told his current club that he would not continue past his contract’s expiration date (June 30).

“Thank you Gabi for the two wonderful years! We wish you and your family the very best for the future. You’ll always be a part of the #AlSadd family,” Al Sadd tweeted on Monday.

He has made 55 appearances for Al Sadd over two seasons and has donned the captain’s band for the side.

Gabi will rejoin his former club ahead of the 2020-21 season as Diego Simeone’s top assistant, according to multiple reports.

Radio Marca had the news first, reporting that Gabi will replace Mono Burgos — Simeone’s long-time number-two — from next season as the Argentine prepares to begin his own managerial career.
