Xavi confirmed as Al Sadd coach

Doha, Qatar: Qatar Stars League champions Al Sadd officially announced that club captain Xavi Hernandez, who retired at the end of the season, will take over as the new coach.

The former Barcelona and Spain midfield maestro signed a two-year deal, Al Sadd said on their website. Xavi will be in charge from the pre-season training camp in Girona from July 14-29.

The 39-year old, who made a record 767 appearances for Barcelona and 133 for Spain in his glittering playing career before moving to Sadd in 2015, will replace veteran Portuguese coach Jesualdo Ferreira.

Coming through the famed Barcelona academy La Masia, Xavi became one of the greatest midfielders ever and was the key to the Catalan side’s breath-taking tiki taka game and has won eight La Liga titles and four Champions League crowns, besides plenty of other titles,  before joining Al Sadd in 2015.
