We’re ready to face Al Duhail challenge, says Al Sadd coach Xavi

DOHA: Al Sadd coach Xavi Hernandez exuded confidence ahead of their team’s crucial AFC Champions League Round of 16 clash against city rivals Al Duhail here on Tuesday.

“We respect them (Duhail) but we still remember the Amir Cup final where we lost against them last May. This is a chance to avenge defeat,” said Xavi, who took over the top job at Sadd from Jesualdo Ferreira end of 2018-19 season. “We’ve a tough game against one of the best teams in the Middle East.”

The former Barca great also said that he is enjoying his new stint as a coach.

“I’m happy to be the team’s coach. It’s a big opportunity for me. I’m thankful to the club for their trust and happy to coach these players,” said the 37-year-old, who joined the club in 2015-16 season as a player.  

After spending four years as a player, the Asian title remains absent from the former midfielder’s trophy cabinet.

“I won everything as a player except the ACL. We can do it now. We came close against Persepolis last year in the semis. Football gives you opportunities and we have one now to do better,” added Xavi.

Sadd, the reigning Qatar Stars League champions, had a training camp in Spain over the summer but some of the team’s core players had a busy June/July with the Copa America and the African Cup of Nations.
