Switzerland, Mali and Portugal seal round of 16 spots at FIFA U-17 World Cup

DOHA: Switzerland marched into the Round of 16 at the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2025 with an impressive 3-1 victory over Egypt on Friday at Aspire Academy. Nevio Scherrer, Ethan Bruchez, and Gil Stiel found the net for the Swiss side, while Anas Rashdi offered Egypt a brief lifeline with their only goal. Switzerland will now take on the winner of the Ireland vs. Canada clash in the knockout stage.
Mali also confirmed their place in the last 16 with a commanding 3-1 win over Zambia. Raymond Boumba, Seydou Dembele, and Lamine Keita were on target for the West African side, as Mapalo Simot replied for Zambia. Mali’s next challenge will be against the victor of the Morocco-USA encounter.
Portugal completed the trio of teams progressing on Friday, edging Belgium 2-1. Anisio Cabral delivered a standout performance with a match-winning brace, while Noah Fernandez scored for Belgium. Portugal will meet the winner of the Argentina vs. Mexico match in the Round of 16.
