Spurs captain Son confirms summer exit

SEOUL: Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min has confirmed that he will leave the club this summer, ending a memorable 10-year spell in North London. The 33-year-old South Korean forward, who joined Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, shared the emotional decision during a press conference ahead of the team’s pre-season match against Newcastle United in Seoul.

Son, under contract until 2026, played a pivotal role in guiding Tottenham to their first trophy in 17 years — lifting the Europa League title in May after defeating Manchester United.

“I think it was one of the most difficult decisions I’ve ever made in my football career,” Son said. “Playing football and being with one team for 10 years is something I am very proud of. But I think I gave my all to the team every single day.”

British media have linked him with a move to MLS side Los Angeles FC, though Son has yet to confirm his next destination.

Across a decade at Spurs, Son made 454 appearances, scoring 173 goals. He was the Premier League’s Golden Boot winner in the 2021-22 season and is widely regarded as one of the club’s modern greats.(Reuters)
