PSG lifts French Cup with 2-1 win over Lyon in Mbappe’s farewell match
VILLENEUVE D’ASCQ, France: Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) secured their record-extending 15th French Cup title with a 2-1 victory over Olympique Lyonnais on Saturday, completing a domestic treble in what was Kylian Mbappe’s final match for the club. First-half goals from Ousmane Dembele and Fabian Ruiz at Lille’s Stade Pierre-Mauroy sealed the win for the Ligue 1 and French Super Cup champions.
PSG dominated the opening half, showcasing their attacking prowess. Dembele opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, heading in a precise cross from Nuno Mendes. Fabian Ruiz then doubled the lead with a goal from a tight angle, capitalizing on a second attempt after his initial shot was blocked.
Lyon managed to reduce the deficit ten minutes into the second half when Jake O’Brien headed in from a corner. However, PSG’s Gianluigi Donnarumma made a crucial save shortly after to preserve their lead.
Reflecting on the victory, PSG midfielder Warren Zaire-Emery expressed his joy, saying, “It’s my first cup and there’s a great atmosphere in the squad. We’re certainly keen to win all the trophies, we’ve had a great season. The group is magnificent and we hope that next season will be just as good.”
Despite not scoring in his farewell game, Mbappe leaves PSG as the club’s all-time top scorer with 256 goals in 308 appearances over seven years. He shared his mixed emotions after the match, stating, “I’ve been thinking a lot about the last few years. Saying that it’s all over, it makes my heart ache a little. What I’ve had here, I’ll never find anywhere else.”
