Mexico City promises inclusive celebration as 2026 World Cup countdown begins

MEXICO CITY: Mexico City marked one year to the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Wednesday with a festive ceremony and the unveiling of a countdown clock by Mayor Clara Brugada, who pledged a warm, inclusive welcome for fans from around the world.
Speaking at a FIFA event, Brugada highlighted the city’s history as a football hub — preparing to host the tournament for a record third time — and emphasized the capital’s commitment to diversity and openness. “All football fans are welcome here. In this city, no one is a foreigner,” she declared. “We will joyfully welcome those who come from all corners of the globe, with their music, their colours, their languages and their passion.”
Brugada’s remarks subtly contrasted with past immigration policies in co-host nation the United States under former President Donald Trump, reinforcing Mexico City’s message of unity and acceptance.
She also reassured local residents near the iconic Azteca Stadium, noting that over six billion pesos would be invested in public service upgrades and infrastructure improvements, ensuring the World Cup benefits the local community as well.
With one year to go, the city is preparing not only to host world-class football but also to celebrate the global spirit that defines the beautiful game.
