Maresca handed one-match ban after wild celebration against Liverpool

LONDON: Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has been given a one-match touchline ban and fined £8,000 ($10,689) after admitting to a charge of misconduct during his team’s dramatic 2-1 victory over Liverpool, England’s Football Association announced on Wednesday.

The Italian coach was sent off deep into stoppage time after sprinting along the touchline to celebrate Chelsea’s last-gasp winner with his players at Stamford Bridge. Referee Anthony Taylor showed Maresca a second yellow card for his exuberant reaction.

“It was alleged that the manager acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour during the fixture, which led to his dismissal around the 96th minute,” the FA said in a statement.

Maresca accepted the charge and the standard penalty, meaning he will be absent from the dugout for Chelsea’s next Premier League fixture away to Nottingham Forest on Saturday. The Blues currently sit seventh in the table with 11 points, five behind league leaders Arsenal.
