Lopetegui reflects on Qatar’s opening defeat to Palestine in Arab Cup 2025

DOHA: Qatar national football team head coach Julen Lopetegui voiced his disappointment following his side’s 1–0 defeat to Palestine in their opening FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025 match at Al Bayt Stadium on Monday. The Group A clash saw Qatar dominate possession but fail to convert multiple scoring opportunities, allowing a determined Palestinian side to claim a well-earned victory.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Lopetegui acknowledged that Qatar were wasteful in front of goal and paid the price for missed chances. He praised Palestine’s spirited display, noting that they fought until the final whistle and deserved the result based on their commitment and physical strength.

The Spanish coach stressed that the defeat could not be attributed to the absence of key players such as Boualem Khoukhi, Pedro Miguel, and Karim Boudiaf. He affirmed that the squad selected for the tournament includes high-quality players capable of delivering strong performances.

Despite the setback, Lopetegui expressed confidence in Qatar’s ability to bounce back when they face Syria in their next match. He believes the team will regain their rhythm and keep their qualification hopes for the quarterfinals alive.

Lopetegui also highlighted Palestine’s advantage of having already played a competitive preliminary match against Libya, which helped sharpen their physical performance—an edge that ultimately made the difference in Al Khor.
