Liverpool on the brink of glory, but Slot urges focus against Spurs

LIVERPOOL, England: Liverpool need just one point at home against a struggling Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday to clinch their 20th English top-flight title, but manager Arne Slot has warned against premature celebrations.

Following Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace in midweek, the Reds now require only a draw to seal the Premier League crown, reaching 80 points in 34 games during Slot’s remarkable debut season since taking over from Jürgen Klopp.

“It’s a big responsibility,” Slot said on Friday. “We are aware the last time this club won the league was during COVID time, so everybody is looking forward to Sunday. But we know there’s still a job to do.”

Slot emphasized that the celebrations can wait until the final whistle, with Liverpool having lost just twice all season and now 12 points clear at the top with a game in hand.

The Dutchman credited continuity and clarity of style as key to his early success. “We already knew we wouldn’t change too much. You walk through the doors here or at Anfield, you know this club has to win trophies,” he said.

When asked whether Liverpool’s dominance this season was due to a weaker Premier League, Slot dismissed the notion. “You are aware of the responsibility, but that’s not the first thing you think about when you walk through this door,” he added.

Sunday could mark a historic chapter for Liverpool, but Slot is making sure his players remain grounded until the job is done.(Reuters)
