Fernandez is new Gharafa coach

FRENCH coach Jean Fernandez, who had recently parted ways with Qatar Stars League (QSL) club Al Khor, took charge of rivals Al Gharafa last Monday.

Fernandez, a former Olympique Marseille and Montpellier coach, had helped Khor finish 11th in the recently-concluded QSL and guided them to the Emir’s Cup quarterfinal.

The 62-year-old had represented French Ligue 1 sides such as Marseille and Bordeaux during his playing days.

Gharafa, who were managed by caretaker Habib Sadeq after Pedro Caixinha left for Scottish club Rangers in March, expect Fernandez to build on their fifth-place finish in the league this season.

“Gharafa are one of the biggest sides in the QSL, and I know the players well. Our aim is to help the club finish among the top four and win trophies,” said Fernandez. “I’ve been asked by the club president to give opportunities to youngsters as well. It’ll be a priority for me.”
