Aspire Academy begins football season with residential training camps

DOHA : Aspire Academy has begun its new football season with a series of residential training camps for its youth age groups as players prepare for domestic and international competitions.

The opening programme featured the 2011 and 2012 age groups, followed by the 2010 squad, before the 2013 and 2014 teams completed the camps.

Spanish coach Mikel Antia has returned to the academy as Technical and Methodology Manager, beginning his second spell after previously working there from 2012 to 2016.

Antia brings experience from his playing and coaching career, including working alongside Rafa Benitez at Newcastle United and most recently at Premier League club Leeds United.

He said Qatar’s hosting of the next four editions of the FIFA Under-17 World Cup could provide a significant boost to football development in the country.

Antia stressed the importance of ensuring that Aspire Academy, its coaches and players understand what is required to compete at the highest level.

“Everyone, from the institution to the coaches and footballers, should realise what is required to compete against the best,” Antia said.

He added that players needed to be provided with the right tools and support to help them remain focused on their development.

Aspire Academy’s pitches will again host the FIFA U-17 World Cup, scheduled for Nov. 19 to Dec. 13. Qatar’s squad is expected to include several Aspire Academy students and graduates.
