Alessio Romagnoli joins Al Sadd on three-year contract from Lazio

DOHA : Qatar’s reigning champions Al Sadd have signed Italian defender Alessio Romagnoli from Lazio on a three-season contract running until the summer of 2029, the club said on Thursday.

The 31-year-old centre-back joins Al Sadd after an experienced career in Italian football that includes spells with AC Milan, Roma and Sampdoria.

Romagnoli played a key role in AC Milan’s Serie A title-winning campaign in the 2021-22 season, adding domestic championship success to his list of achievements.

Following the completion of the transfer, Romagnoli joined Al Sadd’s squad as they prepare for a busy season that includes the Doha Bank Stars League, the AFC Champions League Elite and other domestic competitions.

Al Sadd have made a strong start to their league title defence, winning both of their opening matches to sit top of the standings with six points.

Their next test comes on Saturday when they face Al Gharafa in the third round of the competition.

Romagnoli’s arrival adds experience and defensive depth to an Al Sadd side seeking to compete on multiple fronts this season and defend their domestic title while making an impact in continental competition.
