Al Shamal sign Uruguay youth defender Federico Bais ahead of new season
DOHA: Qatari side Al Shamal have signed Uruguayan defender Federico Bais on a one-year contract from Uruguayan club Nacional, the club said on Thursday, as they continue to strengthen their squad ahead of the 2026-27 season.
Al Shamal announced the arrival of the 18-year-old left-back in a statement on their official social media channels, describing the move as part of the club’s strategy to reinforce the squad with promising young talent across key positions.
Bais is regarded as one of Uruguay’s emerging defensive prospects and has represented his country at youth and under-20 levels. His arrival adds depth to Al Shamal’s defensive options as the club prepares for a demanding campaign on both domestic and continental fronts.
The club will compete in the AFC Champions League Elite for the first time in its history after finishing runners-up in last season’s Qatar Stars League, marking one of the strongest campaigns in the club’s recent history.
Al Shamal will begin their 2026-27 Doha Bank Stars League campaign against Al Arabi on Aug. 21, with the club aiming to build on last season’s success and establish itself among Qatar’s leading teams while making a positive impression in its maiden appearance in Asia’s premier club competition.
