Al Sadd enter Ooredoo Cup quarterfinals
Doha, Qatar: Baghdad Bounedjah and Moustafa Tarek Meshaal led the charge as Al Sadd stormed into the quarterfinals following a 6-0 victory over Al Rayyan in Round 5 (Group A) of the 2019-20 Ooredoo Cup at the Al Wakrah Stadium on Friday.
Moustafa scored in the 10th and 49th minutes, whereas Bounedjah found the target in the 33rd and 45+2 minutes. Abdulaziz Al Ansari (39th minute) and Hamed Ismail (71st minute) were Al Sadd’s other scorers.
After the fourth round, Al Rayyan had progressed to the knockout quarterfinals as the third team from the group with seven points, after Al Ahli and Al Wakrah.
And going into the fifth and final round in the group stage, the fight was between Al Sadd and Umm Salal for the remaining last-eight berth from the group.
Umm Salal also won on the day, beating Al Shahania 2-0, but they could finish only fifth with six points.
Al Sadd and Al Rayyan both ended their campaign on seven points, but the former were placed third on better goal difference (+3 as against Al Rayyan’s -1).
Al Sadd scored 15 goals and conceded 12, while Al Rayyan scored nine goals and conceded 10.
Elsewhere, Abel Mathias and Hernan Perez struck a brace each as Al Ahli blanked Al Wakrah 6-0 in a Group A clash at Al Shamal Stadium.
Abel (37th and 74th minutes), Nabil El Zhar (41st minute), Hernan (53rd and 88th minutes) and Ali Faiz (79th minute) scored for Al Ahli as they ended their campaign with 12 points to top the group.
Al Wakrah finished on eight points.
Al Ahli had qualified for the knockout quarterfinals following their 2-1 win over Al Shahania in the fourth round, along with Al Wakrah and Al Rayyan.
