Al Rayyan coach Aguirre expects tough challenge from Umm Salal
Doha, Qatar: Diego Aguirre has made sure that Al Rayyan will be a challenging unit this season and the Lions are second in the table, four points behind Al Duhail SC.
Starting slowly with three straight draws, Rayyan found their footing with six consecutive wins, including against reigning champions Al Sadd, and even though they dropped points against Al Shahania, Aguirre would be hoping to challenge for the title till the very end.
They take on Umm Salal on Friday and Aguirre is expecting a tough game as they had to share points when the teams met in the first phase.
“I still remember the difficult game we played with Umm Salal in the first leg, which ended in a 2-2 draw. So, I think this match will also be difficult,” said Aguirre.
“It is wrong to think that teams at the bottom of the table will throw away points. They will fight for positive results to improve their position, so I warn the players not to be complacent.
“We respect all opponents. We know that many difficult matches await us in the second leg and we have to be at the top of our readiness,” said Aguirre.
The Uruguayan, who won Amir Cup, Sheikh Jassim Cup and Heir Apparent Cup in his first stint with Rayyan during 2011-13, said Rayyan were looking for a new professional player.
“I know that Al Duhail have recruited Croatian Mario Mandzukic. I was surprised. It is a great deal for Al Duhail because he is a player with huge capabilities and will be useful to the team.
“As far as we are concerned in Al Rayyan, we have sought a new professional player. We are still working on this and we expect him to be a value addition to the team,” said Aguirre.
Meanwhile, Duhail would be hoping to maintain their advantage when they take on Qatar SC on Saturday.
Al Sadd take on Al Wakrah on Thursday while Al Ahli meet Al Arabi. In Friday’s other match, Al Shahania take on Al Gharafa while Al Khor play Al Sailiya on Saturday.
