AFC reiterates support for Qatar 2022

DOHA: The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) reiterated its support for Qatar 2022 as the much awaited FIFA report on the race to host the 2018 World Cup and the Middle East’s first showpiece four years later made no suggestion that Russia or Qatar should lose the right to stage the tournaments.
The 430-page report, which had been under wraps since being completed by FIFA’s then-ethics investigator Michael Garcia in November 2014, was released on Tuesday and the AFC released a statement on Thursday to pledge its support for Qatar 2022.
“The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has noted the conclusions in the recently published FIFA report into the bidding processes for the FIFA World Cups of 2018 and 2022,” said the AFC statement.
“In this regard, the AFC is now looking forward to the continued preparation work to deliver a FIFA World Cup in 2022 which is a showcase not just for the game in Qatar but for football throughout Asia.
“The AFC will support Qatar throughout this process which will lead to a historic FIFA World Cup in 2022 – the first-ever in the Middle East and Arab World,” it added.
