McIntosh breaks another world record with stunning 200m IM swim

TORONTO: Summer McIntosh continued her sensational form at the Canadian swimming trials, breaking a world record for the second time in just three days. The 18-year-old clocked 2:05.70 in the 200m individual medley on Monday, eclipsing Katinka Hosszu’s long-standing mark from the 2015 World Championships.

McIntosh, who had already shattered the 400m freestyle world record on Saturday, trimmed 0.42 seconds off Hosszu’s record, capping a remarkable run of performances at Saanich Commonwealth Place.

“It’s been one of those records that’s always been in the back of my mind,” McIntosh said. “To finally do it, it’s kind of like ‘Wow, I’ve finally got that done.’”

The triple Olympic champion from Paris—where she won gold in the 200m butterfly and both the 200m and 400m IM—also took silver in the 400m freestyle and swam the third-fastest 800m freestyle in history on Sunday.

With the world championships in Singapore fast approaching, McIntosh sees her latest feat as a major confidence boost. “There’s no room for mistakes in the 200 IM. It’s kind of a sprint event for me, and I’m really happy with that swim,” she said.

McIntosh also holds the 400 IM world record, making her one of the most dominant and versatile swimmers in the world today.
