Hasaranga steps down as Sri Lanka’s T20 captain
COLOMBO: Wanindu Hasaranga has stepped down as the captain of Sri Lanka’s Twenty20 team, the country’s cricket board announced on Thursday. This decision comes shortly after Sri Lanka’s disappointing early exit from the T20 World Cup held in the West Indies and United States.
Hasaranga, 26, had taken over the captaincy in December, succeeding Dasun Shanaka. However, under his leadership, the 2014 T20 World Cup champions failed to advance past the qualifying round and were knocked out before reaching the Super Eight stage.
In a statement, Sri Lanka Cricket revealed that Hasaranga believed stepping down was in the best interest of the team. Despite relinquishing his captaincy duties, Hasaranga emphasized his commitment to the team. “Sri Lanka will always have my utmost best efforts as a player, and I will support and stand by my team and leadership as always,” he stated.
Hasaranga’s presence on the field will continue to be crucial for Sri Lanka as they rebuild and aim for future successes in international cricket.
