Gael Monfils announces retirement at end of 2026 season
Gael Monfils confirmed on Wednesday that he will bring his two-decade career to a close at the end of the 2026 season.
The 39-year-old Frenchman, a former world number six, revealed his decision in a message on social media, saying: “Now, after celebrating my 39th birthday just a month ago, I’d like to share that the year ahead will be my last as a professional tennis player. Though this game means the world to me, I’m tremendously at peace with my decision to retire at the end of the 2026 tennis season.”
Monfils has collected 13 ATP titles since his 2004 debut, reaching three Masters 1000 finals but never lifting the trophy. He advanced to the semi-finals at Roland Garros in 2008 and the US Open in 2016, while also playing in two Davis Cup finals for France.
Reflecting on his career, Monfils said: “While I came close, I never did win a Grand Slam during my career. Believe me when I say that I have no regrets.”
