Friedrich sets new world record in women’s sprint

Germany’s Lea Friedrich shattered the women’s sprint world record on Friday, just minutes after New Zealand’s Ellesse Andrews had set the same record. Competing in the Olympic qualifying rounds at the Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines velodrome, the 24-year-old Friedrich completed the lap in a blistering 10.029 seconds.

Friedrich’s record-breaking performance followed Andrews’ remarkable ride, where the newly-crowned Keirin gold medallist clocked 10.108 seconds, surpassing the previous world record of 10.154 seconds set by Canada’s Kelsey Mitchell in 2019.

The day’s events saw records falling in rapid succession, with the Olympic record being lowered four times before Andrews and Friedrich took to the track. The lightning-fast Paris velodrome has been the site of numerous world records, with nine set before the stunning performances by Andrews and Friedrich. The new benchmarks set the stage for a thrilling final on Sunday.
