Ayub’s century powers Pakistan to thrilling win over South Africa

PAARL: Pakistan’s dynamic opener, Saim Ayub, showcased his immense talent with a scintillating century, leading his team to a narrow three-wicket victory over South Africa in the first ODI at Boland Park, Paarl, on Tuesday.

The 22-year-old left-hander crafted an elegant 109 off 119 balls, marking his second century in just seven ODIs. His composed knock anchored Pakistan’s chase of 240, which they achieved with three balls to spare after South Africa posted 239-9 in their 50 overs.

Ayub, who faced early challenges from South Africa’s disciplined bowlers, combined with Salman Ali Agha for a game-changing 141-run partnership for the fifth wicket. The duo steadied the innings after Pakistan had faltered, keeping their team’s hopes alive as the required run rate climbed.

The turning point came in the 35th over when Ayub launched an aggressive assault on pacer Ottniel Baartman, smashing 17 runs in four deliveries to bring Pakistan closer to victory. Despite some late wickets, Pakistan held their nerve to secure the win and take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
