Kerr shines as New Zealand clinch maiden women’s T20 World Cup

DUBAI: New Zealand secured their first-ever Women’s Twenty20 World Cup title with a commanding 32-run victory over South Africa in the final on Sunday, after twice finishing runners-up in 2009 and 2010. All-rounder Amelia Kerr delivered a stellar performance, contributing with both bat and ball to guide her team to victory.

South Africa, chasing 159 for victory, could only manage 126/9 in their 20 overs. Captain Laura Wolvaardt top-scored with 33 off 27 balls, while she and Tazmin Brits gave the Proteas a solid start, forming a 51-run opening partnership. However, Fran Jonas broke through by dismissing Brits in the seventh over.

Kerr, who battled through cramps after her earlier batting heroics, made a crucial impact with the ball, removing Wolvaardt and Anneke Bosch in the same over. Rosemary Mair also contributed, taking three wickets to derail South Africa’s chase.

Earlier, South Africa won the toss and chose to bowl, striking early as Georgia Plimmer was dismissed for nine. Despite this setback, New Zealand posted a challenging total of 158, the second-highest score in a Women’s T20 World Cup final, with a late surge adding 73 runs in the final six overs.

Kerr’s all-round brilliance proved decisive, helping New Zealand lift their maiden World Cup trophy in the format.
