Barca emerge IHF Super Globe champions

Doha: Barca Lassa defeated Fuchse Berlin 29-24 to defend the IHF Super Globe at Al Duhail Sports Hall on Friday.

After a fiercely-fought first half during which the Germans almost matched the Barca, the defending turned on the style in the second to emerge as deserving winners.

It was the Catalan side’s fourth triumph at Super Globe, after also emerging champions in 2013 and 2014.

“It was a tough game. In the first half we had real difficulties against Füchse Berlin. They played a really good game but we managed to keep calm and in the second half we got control of the game. We stood good in the defence, Kevin Moller was amazing in the goal and we played really good attack also. That was great and we are really happy,” said Barca’s Casper Ulrich Mortensen.

Earlier Montpellier HB defeated Al Sadd 33-23 in the third place playoff.

Meanwhile, the IHF Council Meeting held on the sidelines of the event decided to expand the World Championships to a 32-team event from the current 24.

The expansion is applicable for senior, junior and youth in both genders – starting from 2021, with the goal of providing an opportunity for more nations to gain experience on the biggest international stage.
