UAE’s Mabkhout leads goal-scorers list

DOHA: Ali Mabkhout of UAE leads the goal-scorers list with five after the end of the group stages at the 24th Arabian Gulf Cup.

The Al Jazira striker has netted 13 and is the second-highest after Kuwait’s Jassim Yacoub (18).

Qatar’s Abdulkarim Hassan and Akram Afif occupy the second place with three goals each in the Doha tournament.

Six players have scored two each –Mohammed Qassem (Iraq), Abdulaziz Al Muqbali (Oman), Yousef Nasser (Kuwait), Thiago Augusto (Bahrain) and Firas Al-Braikan and Hattan Bahabri (Saudi Arabia).

Goal glut in group games

This year’s tournament has set a record with 39 goals (3.25 goals per game) scored at the group stage.

The 17th edition in Doha had witnessed 37 goals followed by 31 in the following edition in the UAE (2007).

A total of 20 goals were scored in the 22nd Arab Gulf Cup in Riyadh (2014) while the previous edition in Kuwait recorded 22 goals.
