Iran beat India to claim beach kabaddi gold
Sanya, China: The men’s Beach Kabaddi final at the 6th Asian Beach Games served as a sobering reality check for India, as a disciplined and dominant Iran clinically secured the gold medal with a 44-31 victory.
While the Indian women’s team celebrated their sixth consecutive title earlier in the day, the men were forced to settle for silver after being tactically dismantled on the Sanya sands. Pakistan and Sri Lanka took home bronze.
India’s undoing was a sluggish start. The only moment of parity occurred in the first half when India briefly led 9-8. However, Iran quickly neutralized the threat, utilizing a boxed-in defensive formation that stifled India’s star raider, Neeraj. By relying too heavily on individual brilliance rather than collective strategy, India allowed Iran to dictate the tempo.
Iran’s relentless pressure resulted in a commanding 23-11 lead at halftime. The strategy was clear: overwhelm India early and exploit the momentum shifts inherent in beach sports.
The score was tied seven times before the 9-9 mark, but once Iran pivoted, they never looked back. Iran’s defence was the story of the match, accounting for 20 of their 44 points. Captain Malak Mohammad, a veteran of the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games, anchored the backline with his trademark high-intensity leg-holds.
