Yamal withdrawn from Spain squad with muscle strain
Barcelona teenage sensation Lamine Yamal has been withdrawn from the Spain squad to avoid worsening a muscle strain, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced on Sunday. The 17-year-old forward limped off in the final minute of Spain’s 1-0 Nations League victory over Denmark on Saturday.
“Lamine Yamal underwent an MRI scan in Madrid this morning to assess the discomfort he reported after the match against Denmark,” the RFEF stated. “The tests did not reveal a structural injury, and the RFEF’s medical services have confirmed that it is a case of overwork.”
The statement added that the decision was made to leave Yamal out of Spain’s next fixture against Serbia on Tuesday, to “prioritise his health and avoid any risk of injury.” The youngster will now return to Barcelona for recovery.
Atletico Madrid midfielder Rodrigo Riquelme has been called up to replace Yamal in the squad.
