West Ham to visit Michail Antonio after “miracle” car crash escape

West Ham United manager Julen Lopetegui and his players are set to visit Michail Antonio in hospital as the Jamaican forward recovers from a serious car crash. Antonio, 34, was rushed to the hospital after being cut out of his Ferrari following a collision in Epping last weekend.

The striker underwent surgery for a lower limb fracture and is expected to spend several weeks in recovery due to multiple injuries sustained in the crash.

Despite his condition, Antonio managed to join a video call with his teammates before their vital 2-1 victory over Wolves on Monday. In a show of support, the West Ham squad warmed up wearing “Antonio 9” shirts, and Jarrod Bowen held up Antonio’s jersey after scoring the winning goal.

Speaking ahead of Monday’s Premier League match against Bournemouth, Lopetegui reflected on the relief surrounding Antonio’s condition. “We are going to visit him today or tomorrow,” he said. “The main thing is we are very happy because he is recovering very well.

“Looking at the car crash, it was one miracle he was okay,” Lopetegui added. “Now he is strong, recovering as a man first and then as a player.”

Antonio’s recovery will be monitored in the coming months as the team continues to rally around him.
