Vinicius Junior set for early return in Champions League clash with Atalanta

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that Vinicius Junior is ahead of schedule in his recovery from a hamstring injury and will return for Tuesday’s Champions League match against Atalanta.

The Brazilian winger was initially expected to be sidelined until the Intercontinental Cup final on December 18. However, after returning to training on Friday, Ancelotti announced Vinicius would miss Saturday’s La Liga trip to Girona but would be ready for the midweek European fixture.

“Vini has recovered from his injury very well. He will not be ready for tomorrow, but he will be for the next Champions League game,” Ancelotti said during Friday’s press conference.

Vinicius’ return is a timely boost for Madrid, who have endured a disappointing Champions League campaign, losing three of their first five matches and sitting 24th in the group standings.

Meanwhile, Kylian Mbappé remains under scrutiny following a dip in form. The French striker, who joined from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer, has struggled with missed penalties and inconsistent performances, though he has managed 10 goals in 20 appearances this season.

Ancelotti defended Mbappé, praising his awareness of his struggles. “He knows what he can do, and will do,” said Ancelotti, adding that a rest may benefit the forward in the near future.
